Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Tom McCann is backing calls from local residents for a rethink of the pedestrian crossing on Andover's Winchester Road. The crossing is a regularly used by parents and children walking from Old Winton Road and Wolversdene Road to Anton School. However the crossing is at one of the narrowest parts of the Winchester Road footpath and is often ignored by motorists.
Tom believes that pedestrian controlled lights would be much better. "Children crossing and waiting to cross the road would be safer and lights would allow traffic to exit safely from Old Winton Road" he said. Tom is also backing calls from Andover councillor Donald MacDonald for a review of the use of local roads, including Winchester Road, by heavy goods vehicles. "Winchester Road and its pavements are very narrow and it is unsuitable for heavy goods" he said. "The highways department should consider routing heavy lorries away from here and other residential areas."
