Liberal Democrat Leader, Cllr. Paula Baker
"Conservatives formed the administration of Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council by gaining three seats in Basingstoke last year. The Council recently discussed the Tories' first budget, their proposals for how our money will be spent in the coming financial year.
Liberal Democrat Councillors proposed an alternative budget including:
· increased renewable energy and action on climate change
· increased support for the voluntary sector, parish councils and vulnerable residents
· fewer committees and bringing decision making closer to residents all paid for by costed efficiency savings.
These improvements were blocked by the Conservatives.
Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Paula Baker, said "We believe that leading the local community on Climate Change is vital and would fund renewable energy schemes in Council owned buildings if external funding was not found. Let the Council set an example." Sadly, the Conservative Budget did not include a single proposal on climate change.
The Liberal Democrats proposed to end subsidies from the Council Tax for emptying private cesspools and collecting commercial waste. They opposed the spending of £100,000 on 'image work', believing that the best way of improving the Borough's image is by action, not 'spin'."
