ANDOVER GUILDHALL DEBATE CONTINUES

March 14, 2007 1:10 PM

Cllrs. Len Gates & Josie Msonthi at Andover Town HallLocal residents protested outside the recent council meeting at plans by the Tory led council to let the lower Guildhall. A motion from Andover Lib Dem councillors backing the residents' campaign was deferred without debate.

Proposer of the motion Cllr Len Gates said "the building is underused and more use should be encouraged. But, it is a public building and, if leased, any lease must ensure that local groups still have access to the building." Cllr Josie Msonthi added "This is a matter of great importance to Andover and must be fully debated in public with all councillors present."

The council executive will now consider the motion along with recommendations for future uses from a panel of Andover councillors. A decision on change of use is expected to be made by the full council in April.
