Ed Maxfield, Campaigns Officer, Hants & Wight Liberal Democrats, writes;
Abbey Ward by-election for Test Valley Borough Council polled today.
The result has just been declared and it was:
Sally Lamb (Liberal Democrat) 861
John Ray (Conservative) 842
Liberal Democrat gain from Independent.
The result will be a major blow to Conservative hopes of winning back Romsey at the General Election - one of their most marginal targets.
The Conservatives targetted huge resources at this by-election and their parliamentary candidate - one of the 'New Model Army' of Tory women candidates - personally had a high profile in their campaign.
Working out the swing will be difficult because it is a 2 member ward and the Lib Dems were the only party to put up 2 candidates last time it was fought (2003). However, the Conservative candidate finished almost 100 votes ahead of the best placed Lib Dem. The result then was:
Ind 773
Con 765
LD 678
LD 528
Lab 134
The result is a great vote of confidence in the work of Sandra Gidley and her team.
