Martin Tod reports:
Martin Tod visited Jody Scheckter at Laverstoke Park to find out more about Mr Scheckter's new farming methods and how they improve food quality, the environment and animal welfare.
I had a very productive visit this morning with Paula Baker to Jody and Clare Scheckter at Laverstoke Park. They have the goal of producing the 'best tasting healthiest food' - and are attempting to create the most healthy environment possible to enable their animals to thrive - with particular focus on biodiversity - increasing the range of plants in their leys, replanting hedges and woods, and having a wide range of animals and breeds on the farm. They have plans to develop local cheese production from their cows, sheep, goats and buffalo and to set up a local abattoir to reduce the time that local animals are forced to travel before slaughtering.
Our latest food policy passed at Bournemouth last month, our health policy and our animal welfare policies passed a year ago all refer to how food is produced, and how improved food can improve health, and it was very encouraging to see how our policies are being brought to life (indeed, being surpassed) in the middle of North West Hampshire.
Our food policy also talks about increasing the proportion of local organic food used in school meals: something we should consider bringing to life in our county manifesto.
If anyone is interested in trying some of the Laverstoke Park produce, you can find their shop at Laverstoke Park Butchers Shop, Southley Farm, Overton, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG25 3DR, 01256 771571. To get there, drive south out of Overton on the Winchester Road. It's open Tuesday-Friday from 9am-7pm and from 8am-2pm on Saturdays.
