Martin Tod signs a petition held by Tharka Sen, a retired member of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
Local Liberal Democrat campaigner, Martin Tod, has backed the nationwide campaign to help Gurkhas get the right to live in the UK as citizens when they retire.
After signing a petition in support of the Gurkha campaign, Martin Tod commented: "It is a disgrace that the Gurkhas are treated so unfairly. Gurkha soldiers who have fought for Britain should not have to fight for citizenship as well".
At the recent Liberal Democrat conference in Bournemouth, Tikendra Dewan, a retired Gurkha, spoke to the conference about the campaign. It is only in the most exceptional circumstances that non Party members are given the opportunity to address the national conference. The Conference backed the campaign overwhelmingly.
The Liberal Democrats are strongly backing the Gurkhas position that they should, if they wish, at the end of their service be allowed to stay, as citizens, in this country. The campaign has been growing for years, and the Liberal Democrats have consistently supported their claim for citizenship.
